Challenge

Creating EHS training modules while complying with strict security and compliance requirements. Overcoming traditional training formats, which lack flexibility and realism for complex industrial procedures.

Results

1000+ employees trained in VR for EHS. 6+ training categories deployed using VR.

Collaborating with Altheria for several years now, initially focusing on the LOTO procedure, has been fantastic. Altheria's responsiveness to feedback made it a smooth journey. We have introduced VR Trainings to hundreds of trainees in EHS at GSK, who are always amazed by the realism and quality of the experiences. My goal is to expand VR training at GSK, and Altheria's support and availability have been invaluable in achieving this.

About GSK

GSK is a global leader in the pharma sector. With 35 sites across the world, the Belgian sites are the core location for vaccine production. Thousands of employees come to GSK Wavre daily. Additionally, many external providers are deployed on site every day. To facilitate EHS training for all the workers on site, GSK decided to deploy VR Training modules.

The Challenge

Whether they are an employee, a service provider, a delivery person or a visitor, each person must follow the safety guidelines before accessing the site. On top of that, many employees must be trained and prepared for more specific safety topics.

GSK put in place a Learning and Development department, responsible for creating and deploying training at large scale. When immersive technology proved to be effective in training, they got the idea to use VR to facilitate training in multiple departments.

GSK needed full control, security, and compliance over EHS training content for more than a thousand workers and external suppliers on premise, every single day.

Off-the-shelf solutions were not a solution for GSK's internal procedures. Outsourcing content creation limited autonomy and represented a substantial cost. At the same time, training needed to scale across multiple teams and topics, without compromising safety standards.

The opportunity was clear: GSK needed to enable internal teams to design, manage, and scale VR training independently.

The Solution

GSK partnered with Altheria to progressively build a VR training platform, centered around the Altheria Editor. GSK’s L&D team quickly adopted the no-code editor to design and manage their own VR training modules internally.

Training creation shifted from a standalone VR solution to a fully integrated, long-term learning ecosystem. The Altheria Editor for creating training scenarios, and the Altheria Console as training companion: real-time training when the sessions are given, and analytics after the training sessions for audits and debriefings. It was the only way to succeed at standardising and scaling the training modules.

Today, trainers and learning experience designers actively design and deploy VR trainings, supported by Altheria’s team for platform evolution and strategic guidance. We consider GSK as one of our most valued partners to this day, and an incredible source of improvement ideas.

How it works today at GSK:

  • Internal content creation using the Altheria Editor
  • Full autonomy for GSK trainers and L&D people
  • Integration with GSK's LMS
  • Secure and sovereign management of sensitive data and content
  • Expansion across multiple topics, including LOTOTO, spill response, fire prevention, cutting hazards, etc.

The Results

VR training is now a strategic learning tool at GSK.

Hundreds of employees regularly train in VR for EHS topics, with consistently positive feedback on learning effectiveness.

By internalising content creation, GSK achieved:

  • Full autonomy and faster iteration cycles
  • Long-term cost efficiency and very positive ROI
  • Strong ownership over training quality and safety standards
